How’s summer going for you? Here in Southern NSW they’re saying the coldest since 1965. Some friends have just arrived from Wales complete with tandem and in search of a warm, dry escape from a UK winter!!
Our Mountains to Beach event is just around the corner and as always we're looking forward to it. Before that occurs we have a rare occasion – the 29th February. This has officially been declared International Day of the 29er by the UCI. Apparently only 29 inch wheels are allowed on singletrack that day so if you've got a 29er, take a Leap and flaunt the big wheels. If you haven't, stay off the trails. Talking of 29ers, see below for a great opportunity to get one and contribute to a wonderful cause.
A huge big welcome to Danien Beets who recently joined the Wild Horizons team as our Operations Manager. A keen rider and trail advocate, Danien has helped on a number of our events and now takes on a key role in what we do. He got off to a shaky start, turning up for the first day at work in a 3 piece suit complete with briefcase, cuff links and tie, but is now settled into event T shirt and shorts...........

2012 MOUNTAINS TO BEACH - 5-9 March

In less than 4 weeks things start going downhill – fast for some, slower for others. Our 5 day, 380km stage race from the highest mountains in Australia to the beaches of the south coast of NSW. The MTB is not just a race; it is a magnificent tour and experience. Just shy of 100 riders are now signed up, so if you deserve a treat and fancy a week on the bike amongst like minded souls then come and join us. At the pointy end, 2011 winner Andy Fellows will have his work cut out defending his title from the likes of Jason English and Shaun Lewis. Check out all the details here. A GREAT BIKE FOR A GREAT CAUSE

Many of you will remember that on Xmas Eve a tragedy befell the NSW Aeromedical Unit. Mick Wilson, a paramedic with the unit ,was killed when trying to effect a helicopter rescue at Carrington Falls here in the Southern Highlands.
Dr Carissa Oh is a good friend of Wild Horizons and a good friend and colleague of Mick. A number of mountain bikers at events and recreational riding have been grateful for the professional services provided by the NSW rescue ambulances. Carissa was the lucky 2011 Briars Highland Fling rider who won the draw for a Specialized Epic Comp Carbon 29er bike valued at $4500. Carissa, with the support of our sponsor Specialized, has decided to sell the bike with all proceeds going to the Mick Wilson Family Appeal , raising funds for Mick’s widow and 3 young children. Carissa is looking to sell the bike for $3500 and it is available from Specialized in sizes S, M, L, XL. Bike Details can be found here . SWEET RIDING, SWEET LIVING - BIKING THE BOOT - ITALY 2012

There are just 2 places left on our MTB journey in Italy. Details and entries are here for this trip running from 5-25 May. It all starts with a 10 day MTB tour crossing the country from Rome in the west to Riolo Terme in the East - across the calf of the big boot if you like! We ride through Umbria and Tuscany to finish in the Emilia Romagna region; riding high ridges and deep valleys ,staying in hotels and enjoying fine food and wine en route. At the end of the tour we will relax for a couple of days before taking part in the Rally Di Romagna, a tough but magnificent 5 day MTB stage race. Due to a lack of time we took a break from running MTB Skills Courses over the past year. But they are on their way back! Full details will be on the website soon but we have Beginner and Intermediate MTB Skills Courses in late April (date to be confirmed) and a Womens MTB Skills Course on Sunday 20 May 2012 . Both courses will take place in our backyard; The Southern Highlands of NSW. |
BRIARS BIKERS DELIGHT - 24-26 August

If you like fine food, fine accommodation and most of all fine riding on roadie and/or MTB then this is the weekend for you. In conjunction with our Highland Fling partner, The Briars Country Lodge & Inn, we're running a weekend that will blow your sidewalls! The Briars will form the base for a weekend of road riding, mountain biking, food, wine, bike fitting, inspirational talks and much more. We are selling our fleet of Trek 6500 mountain bikes from our Hire Fleet at Ye Olde Bicycle Shoppe in Bundanoon, our cafe and bike hire business. The Trek 6500s are 18 months old and have been well serviced and hired on average 20 times each. We have 1 x 15.5in, 2 x 17.5in, 2 x 19.5in and 1 x 21.5in.
